So, what is the difference?
Although there are a few subtle differences, the main difference between breeches and jodhpurs is where they finish on your leg.
Jodhpurs, or ‘jods’ as they are often called, are full length ‘riding trousers’, made from a comfortable stretchy fabric. They are designed to be worn with short jodhpur or paddock boots and are often too bulky around the ankle to be comfortably worn with long riding boots.

Breeches are shorter in length, finishing above the ankle. They tend to be very close-fitting, especially around the ankle, with elasticated fabric at the bottom, or a Velcro fastening. This makes them ideal to be worn with long riding boots or short boots and chaps.

Should I wear jodhpurs or breeches?
Many children wear jodhpurs when they are learning to ride. This helps them learn the correct leg position and feel what they are doing with their lower leg. As they progress or get older they may move onto wearing breeches and long riding boots.

Some adults feel that breeches are smarter or more formal than jodhpurs. However, there are many smart jodhpurs available too, so really it comes down to personal choice.
Is there any other difference between breeches and jodhpurs?
Both breeches and jodhpurs have reinforced knee patches. However, breeches often have a variety of other options available when it comes to the seat.
A full seat is an alternative piece of fabric that covers the entire inside section of the breeches. This provides more grip in the saddle, so full seat breeches are popular with show jumping and cross country riders.

What about riding tights?
Riding tights have become very popular in the last couple of years. They tend to be thinner than jodhpurs and breeches meaning you get much closer contact with the horse.
Riding tights are also ‘pull-on’ in style and made from technical fabrics, so they are generally breathable, comfortable and offer good grip.

This is all down to personal choice.
There are plenty of jodhpurs available in competition colours that won’t cost as much as breeches or riding tights. That makes jodhpurs great for starting out or competing at a lower level.
